Review:

Marissa Baxter has dealt with a lot of trauma in her life- she was hiding under the bed while her mother was murdered and vividly remembers it. After her mother's death, she lived with her aunt and uncle, both of who abuse and mistreat her in differing ways.

Her life is finally getting better after years of hard work on her part, as well as the help of former close friends. She lives alone in a little one-bedroom apartment. She has adopted a stray cat outside. Her career isn't exciting, but it's stable, and she's her own boss.

But then Marissa's life is upended when she gets a new client whom seems way too interested in her.  A strange, disruptive new neighbor moves in and Marissa starts receiving threatening letters in her letter box. Then her estranged uncle is murdered and she can’t remember where she was that night. In addition, Marissa feels that someone is stalking her. Due to her frequent blackouts, Marissa is not sure that she can trust herself and wonders if perhaps she murdered her uncle.

I’ve seen this plot before, but the ending was unique. I enjoyed the writing style for the most part but I felt that Marissa’s thoughts of “I can’t trust anyone” were extremely repetitive. I also sometimes found the flashbacks a bit confusing. Overall, I did enjoy the story but felt that it’s missing something.

Quotes:

"I know you want to go out with me. I can see what's happening between us and I know under the innocent pretense you can too. I didn't come here today to check out your home office. I came here to check you out and I like what I see. Come on, say yes as I don't take rejection well."

"I'm a nice guy, I promise, and I know how to treat a lady."
-the world's biggest red flag
